Water Use
Does the amount of water used by ethanol plants hurt the environment?
No. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, even if all of the ethanol plants in Iowa used all of the water that they are permitted to use in one year, it would only be one seven thousandth (0.007%) of all of the water that falls as precipitation each year in the state of Iowa.
It takes about three gallons of water to produce one gallon of ethanol. However, the new dry mill ethanol plants being constructed today (including many of Iowa’s current plants) average less than three gallons of water per gallon of ethanol produced.
