Soy Energy, LLC Begins Construction on Biodiesel Refinery near Marcus
Iowa Now Has 13 Operating Biodiesel Refineries and 3 Under Construction
JOHNSTON, IA – The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) today congratulated Soy Energy, LLC for beginning construction on its biodiesel refinery near Marcus, Iowa. The facility will process soybean oil and animal fats into 30 million gallons of biodiesel and 3 million gallons of glycerin annually.
“Soy Energy is another exciting addition to Iowa’s world-class biodiesel industry,” said Monte Shaw, IRFA Executive Director. “This project is driven by Iowans who believe in the future of biodiesel. IRFA looks forward to working with Soy Energy to maximize the economic impact of producing and blending biodiesel in Iowa.”
Marcus Mayor and Soy Energy Board Member Darrell Downs stated: “This is a grassroots plant with over 900 investors. Money will flow back into the nine county area. The plant will employ 24 people with good paying jobs. With an ethanol plant and now a biodiesel plant, we see a lot of growth. For example, the Marcus Junction truck stop, which offers E10, E85, and biodiesel, has been open almost a year and sales have been great.”
The refinery is being designed and built by Bratney Companies of Des Moines, Iowa. “We are very pleased to be Soy Energy's design-build contractor for their large scale commercial biodiesel plant project at Marcus, Iowa,” said Paul Bratney, President & CEO of Bratney Companies. “This plant will utilize the world-class next generation CD+ biodiesel process technology provided by Bratney in cooperation with partners Cimbria Sket and Westfalia Separator.”
Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production. Iowa has 13 biodiesel refineries with a combined annual capacity of nearly 260 million gallons in operation. Three biodiesel refineries under construction will add 95 million gallons of capacity. In addition, Iowa has 28 ethanol refineries with the capacity to produce over 1.9 billion gallons annually. There are 19 ethanol refineries under construction or expansion that will add nearly 1.4 billion gallons of annual capacity. Many additional renewable fuels projects are under development.
The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association was formed in 2002 to represent the state’s ethanol and biodiesel producers. The trade group fosters the development and growth of the renewable fuels industry in Iowa through education, promotion, legislation and infrastructure development.
