Siouxland Energy Completes Major Expansion to
Ethanol Refinery near Sioux Center
Iowa Surpasses 2 Billion Gallons of Ethanol Production Capacity
JOHNSTON, IA – The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) today congratulated Siouxland Energy and Livestock Cooperative (SELC) for recently completing a major expansion at its ethanol refinery near Sioux Center, Iowa. The plant now processes more than 20 million bushels of corn into nearly 60 million gallons of ethanol, 400,000 tons of wet distillers grains (WDGs), and 140,000 tons of condensed distillers soluables (syrup) annually. The SELC expansion pushes Iowa’s ethanol production capacity over 2 billion gallons annually. Iowa is the largest ethanol-producing state.
“Siouxland Energy’s expansion is a great way to start the year,” said Monte Shaw, IRFA Executive Director. “Iowa is number one in ethanol production with over 2 billion gallons of annual capacity. Although current economics are challenging, as a result of the new energy bill we continue to see a bright future for the ethanol industry – with Iowa leading the way.”
SELC general manager Bernie Punt said, “SELC, the oldest operating farmer owned ethanol plant in Iowa, has a new perspective today in the extremely fast changing ethanol industry. Our expansion project helps keep our plant competitive so we can continue adding value to the farming operations in northwest Iowa.”
Iowans can learn more about where the ethanol and biodiesel industries are headed at the 2nd Annual Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit on Jan. 31 in Des Moines. The event is free, but pre-registration is required. Additional program information and online registration is available at www.iowarfa.org.
Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production. Iowa has 29 ethanol refineries with the capacity to produce over 2 billion gallons annually. There are 17 ethanol refineries under construction or expansion that will add nearly 1.6 billion gallons of annual capacity. In addition, Iowa has 14 biodiesel refineries with a combined annual capacity of over 315 million gallons in operation. Two biodiesel refineries under construction will add 35 million gallons of capacity. Many additional renewable fuels projects are under development.
The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association was formed in 2002 to represent the state’s ethanol and biodiesel producers. The trade group fosters the development and growth of the renewable fuels industry in Iowa through education, promotion, legislation and infrastructure development.
