Prairie Gas in Newton Opens 80th E85 Site in Iowa  

Ethanol Demand Pushes Number of Stations to New Milestone

JOHNSTON, IA – The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) today congratulated Prairie Gas in Newton for opening the 80th E85 refueling site in Iowa. This is the fourth new E85 pump to open already this year. It’s the first such pump to open both in Newton and Jasper County.

“Demand for E85 is creating more opportunities for retailers to offer this product to the thousands of consumers who drive flex fuel vehicles across Iowa,” said IRFA Executive Director Monte Shaw. “The number of E85 refueling sites is growing. People want this product, and we are pleased to see more retailers offering E85.”

Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production. Iowa has 29 ethanol refineries with the capacity to produce over 2 billion gallons annually. There are 17 ethanol refineries under construction or expansion that will add nearly 1.6 billion gallons of annual capacity. In addition, Iowa has 14 biodiesel refineries with a combined annual capacity of over 315 million gallons in operation. Two biodiesel refineries under construction will add 35 million gallons of capacity.  Many additional renewable fuels projects are under development.

The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association was formed in 2002 to represent the state’s ethanol and biodiesel producers. The trade group fosters the development and growth of the renewable fuels industry in Iowa through education, promotion, legislation and infrastructure development.
