Green Plains Renewable Energy Begins Ethanol Production at Superior, IA Location

JOHNSTON, IA – The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) congratulates Green Plains Renewable Energy (GPRE) for starting production at its newest ethanol refinery in Superior, Iowa. The new facility will process more than 20 million bushels of corn into 55 million gallons of ethanol and 175,000 tons of distillers grains annually.  The facility employs 39 people.

“Green Plains Renewable Energy becomes the fourth company with multiple plants operating in Iowa,” said IRFA Executive Director Monte Shaw. “Green Plains can now produce 110 million gallons of ethanol annually.  They have expanded into grain elevators to improve economics and to bring the most affordable product possible to consumers facing skyrocketing gasoline prices.”

GPRE’s first ethanol refinery is located in Shenandoah, Iowa.  “We are proud to be a part of Iowa’s expanding renewable energy economy,” said Wayne Hoovestol, Green Plains’ Chief Executive Officer. “Iowa is fortunate to have leaders who understand the importance of the biofuels industry.  We greatly appreciate the efforts of state and local officials who have made the Superior project a reality.”

Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production. Iowa has 30 ethanol refineries with the capacity to produce over 2.25 billion gallons annually. There are 14 ethanol refineries under construction or expansion that will add over 1.4 billion gallons of annual capacity.  In addition, Iowa has 14 biodiesel refineries with a combined annual capacity of over 315 million gallons in operation.  Many additional renewable fuels projects are under development.

The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association was formed in 2002 to represent the state’s ethanol and biodiesel producers. The trade group fosters the development and growth of the renewable fuels industry in Iowa through education, promotion, legislation and infrastructure development.
