Special Biodiesel Session Offered During Free Retailers Workshop

JOHNSTON, Iowa — Retailers at the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) and Iowa Department of Economic Development’s free workshop on July 30 will have the chance to attend a special session on biodiesel. The workshop runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sheraton Inn in West Des Moines.

The biodiesel session will address the fuel’s year-round benefits and capabilities, as well as some of the quality-control measures in place. A new retail biodiesel blending system will also be introduced. Hoon Ge, a consultant for the National Biodiesel Board (NBB), will be the featured speaker.

“Biodiesel is one of the most energy efficient fuels on the market, so retailers really have a great opportunity to boost business with this product,” said IRFA Managing Director Lucy Norton. “Any diesel vehicle can fuel with biodiesel – a cleaner, more practical alternative. Our session will help retailers better understand this fuel and the year-round potential for biodiesel sales.”

Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production. Iowa has 31 ethanol refineries with the capacity to produce over 2.4 billion gallons annually. There are 13 ethanol refineries under construction or expansion that will add over 1.3 billion gallons of annual capacity. In addition, Iowa has 14 biodiesel refineries with a combined annual capacity of over 315 million gallons in operation. Many additional renewable fuels projects are under development.

The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association was formed in 2002 to represent the state’s ethanol and biodiesel producers. The trade group fosters the development and growth of the renewable fuels industry in Iowa through education, promotion, legislation and infrastructure development.
