DES MOINES, Iowa — The Amaizing Energy Holding Co. is sponsoring a steer in this Saturday’s Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair. The steer was fed with distillers grains, a co-product of ethanol. Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge will show the steer.

The steer’s name is Oreo and is owned by Kysa Roberts of Charter Oak, Iowa. Oreo is the grand market champion from the Crawford County Fair.

“Amaizing Energy has sponsored this steer to show that ethanol is about supporting food and fuel,” said Al Jentz, General Manager of Amaizing Energy, located in Denison, Iowa.

Distillers grains are the co-products produced during ethanol processing. Distillers grains are high in protein and energy, providing a cost-effective feed ingredient that can reduce livestock production costs.

“It’s amazing how many people don’t realize that biofuels plants produce both fuel and food,” said Lucy Norton the Managing Director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA). “Ethanol production uses only the starch portion of the corn kernel, leaving approximately 18 pounds per bushel of nutrient rich distillers grains for feeding all livestock species.

The Governor’s Charity Steer Show will take place on Saturday, August 9, at 4:00 p.m. in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair. After the show is over the steers are auctioned off with proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa.

The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association was formed in 2002 to represent the state’s ethanol and biodiesel producers. The trade group fosters the development and growth of the renewable fuels industry in Iowa through education, promotion, legislation and infrastructure development.
